Junior Maryam Hussein made the move—the move to middle hitter for the Oak Lawn Community High School volleyball team. It turns out to be a move that unlocked her potential as an offensive threat on the court.
While still maintaining her skills as a blocker at the net, the real difference has come as a hitter. She worked tirelessly before the season to make the change. As a result, she leads the Spartans in kills and in kill percentage. In fact, she is currently eighth in the Illinois High School Association Class 4A rankings for hitting percentage.
“Maryam made a difficult switch to the middle this season and has been excelling,” head coach Kathleen Miller said. “She came this season with a renewed focus and has brought great competitive intensity and energy on the court. Maryam has continued being a strong blocker, but her biggest improvement has been her hitting. She worked hard over the summer to become an offensive option for us.”
