OAK LAWN GIRLS TENNIS WINS FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE SINCE 2007

The 2024 version of the Oak Lawn Community High School girls tennis team proved to be of championship caliber. The Spartans performed to their potential this past weekend enroute to winning the South Suburban Conference Red title. It was the girls tennis team’s first conference championship since 2007.

The girls team was led by senior Jessica Komperda at number-two singles, who for the second consecutive time, took all-conference honors by gold medaling for the second year in a row.

“Jessica wore down opponents with her athleticism and intelligence,” head coach Dan Doyle said. “It was overheard that she was like a ‘wall,’ returning everything her opponents threw at her.”

The number-one doubles team of senior Eliza Janik and junior Haley Meskill finished second at conference, eventually falling to the championship team from Reavis. Janik and Meskill avenged an earlier loss during the season to a talented Argo team before pushing Reavis into a third set.

The number-two doubles team of Julia Bolcarovic and Ghofran Ouarehni devastated their opponents at the tournament to claim the gold medal. Solid serving from Bolcarovic was matched by the dogged determination of Ouarehni’s play as she covered the whole court.

The number-three doubles team of Madyson Lane and Hannah Leanos was equally dominant, winning all their matches in two sets to claim the gold medal.

“Lane’s improved play at the net was matched by the equally improved play of Leanos from the baseline,” Doyle said.

Junior stalwart Camille Esguerra fought her way to a fourth-place finish, pushing both her opponents to three sets before falling.
