Stuff You Need to Know

Good Monday morning. Did you know that the great City of Chicago, a city that is so close in proximity to Oak Lawn and many of us were born and lived in, was founded by a Black man? It’s true! Jean-Baptist-Point Du Sable was born in the year 1750 in St. Marc, Saint-Domingue, which is now known as Haiti. He is considered to be the “Father of Chicago” because he was a pioneer trader who founded the settlement that later became the City of Chicago. Born to a French sailor and an enslaved woman of African descent, DuSable would later marry a woman of Potawatomi descent, which is a Native American tribe. He established a trading post that served European and Native American traders in what would later become the third largest city in America and one of the largest cities in the world. DuSable has a museum named after him on the South side of Chicago. Also, the famous Lake Shore Drive was renamed after DuSable to honor his founding of Chicago. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 3, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
