Stuff You Need to Know
Good Tuesday morning. Did you know that as many as three Nobel Prizes in medicine were awarded as a result of the research of cells belonging to a Black woman? The cells belonged to a woman by the name of Henrietta Lacks. A mother of five children, Henrietta Lacks died at the very young age of 31, never knowing that she would leave an extraordinary legacy in the field of medicine. Doctors at Johns Hopkins University treated Henrietta Lacks for cancer but found that her cells behaved differently than the cells of others. Her cells, called HeLa cells, were studied without her permission and have been credited with helping to create the first polio vaccine, as well as countless research on cancer. Although dying at a young age, Henrietta Lacks lives on through the research of medicine around the world. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 4, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
Congrats to junior Justin Canvin for finishing in 34th place at the Boys Bowling IHSA State Finals this past weekend.
