STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - FEBRUARY 7, 2025

Stuff You Need to Know

Good Thursday morning. By now, many have heard about the Montgomery Bus Boycott that was led by Dr. Martin Luther King. It was started because of a Black woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus. But do you know who the first person to refuse to give up their seat on a bus was? If you guessed Rosa Parks, you would be incorrect! Nine months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, a young woman by the name of Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Colvin, who was only 15 years old at the time, was returning home from school when she was asked to get up from her seat. Montgomery segregation laws at the time dictated that Black passengers sit behind white passengers on public transportation, and bus drivers routinely moved Black passengers to make room for white passengers. Colvin, refusing to move, cited that she paid her fare and staying seated was her constitutional right. She was then forcibly removed from the bus by two police officers, handcuffed and arrested, and booked in a local adult jail. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 7, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!

The Varsity Scholastic Bowl team had a nice showing at the SSC meet at Reavis. The team was able to beat Tinley Park in a highly competitive game. For the night, the team was led by Shawn Perry with seven tossup points. Allie Gabriel, Kailey Dykema, Joseph O’Learhy, and Belal Moutaovakki each contributed two tossups a piece. The JV also had a nice night as well with a victory over Reavis. Sara Alorania led the scoring with three tossups. Yusr Elameer contributed two tossups. Evangelina Angulo, Cassidy Perry, and Briza Garcia each answered one tossup a piece.

Congrats to junior Justin Canvin for finishing in 34th place at the Boys Bowling IHSA State Finals this past weekend. Justin started Friday off a little slow with two games below average, and he was sitting in 117th place. He battled back in games 3-6 and made the cut for day 2. Saturday, he continued to climb up the leader board and had OL’s best state finisher since 2015. We are so proud of you Justin!

It was a tremendous season for the Boys Bowling Team, and we have much to celebrate. We have a young team and cannot wait to get back to O’Fallon for the State Finals next year.
