STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - FEBRUARY 10, 2025

Stuff You Need to Know

Happy Monday Spartans. What if I told you that one of America’s greatest spies and freedom riders was also the first Black woman to lead a combat regiment during the Civil War? That person’s name is Araminta Ross, but most know her by her later name, Harriet Tubman. During times of enslavement in America, Harriet Tubman was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a secret system of codes and networks that allowed enslaved people to escape their oppression and relocate in northern states and Canada where enslavement was illegal. Not one of the people that Harriet Tubman led through the Underground Railroad were ever captured, as she would often say, “I never lost a passenger!” Later, she would help serve the Union Army as a nurse and spy, and even led soldiers on the Combahee Ferry Raid, which rescued 700 enslaved people. For her efforts, Tubman posthumously received the rank of brigadier general. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 10, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
