Stuff You Need to Know
Good Wednesday morning. Today we are sharing another Black History Month fact by talking about Black History Month itself. Who created Black History Month and is there a reason the month of February was chosen? Carter G. Woodson, a Black historian, scholar, and the son of former enslaved people, is credited as the “Father of Black History Month.” Woodson is the second Black person in history to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Almost one hundred years ago, in 1926, what is now known as Black History month was first known as “Negro History Week.” The 2nd week in February was chosen as the designated time to celebrate as it coincided with the birthdays of two of the most important figures in Black history, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, the week was extended to a full month in 1976 after President Gerald Ford designated February as Black History Month. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 12, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
