WORD OF THE WEEK:
DERELICT
der·e·lic (dĕr′ə-lĭkt′)
PART OF SPEECH/DEFINITION:
ADJ.: 1. Neglectful of duty or obligation; remiss
SENTENCE: The bane of their existence was accountability, so both men rather than wait for an absolution for their ignominious acts, demurred to face any consequences for their actions and hence Monday morning were found derelict of their duties and hit the rails.
Stuff You Need to Know
Good Thursday morning. There have been many cardiologists who have saved the lives of countless patients over the years, but did you know that the very first cardiologist to perform successful open-heart surgery was a Black man? Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed life-saving surgery on a patient who had a knife lodged in his chest at Provident Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Provident was opened by Dr. Williams, and at the time, it was the only hospital that allowed both Black and White patients. In 1913, he was the first Black doctor to be inducted into the prestigious American College of Surgeons. As a tribute to him, a “code blue” is called a “Dr. Dan” at Howard University Hospital. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 13, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
