Stuff You Need to Know
The Scholastic Bowl team received some exciting news yesterday at conference. Senior Shawn Perry earned SSC Red Varsity All-Conference honors. On the JV level, Evangelina Angulo earned SSC Red JV All-Conference honors. In addition, there were several great performances on the night. For the varsity team, Junior Belal Moutaovakki led all scorers with 5 tossups. Senior Allie Gabriel, in her last conference match, scored 3 tossups. On JV, Yusr Elameer scored 5 tossup questions. Good Thursday morning. As promised, we will speak more about historical figures to win Grammy awards today. Did you know that the very first woman to win the award was a Black woman? Her name was Ella Fitzgerald, and she actually won two Grammys the same night, one for Best Vocal Performance, and one for Best Jazz Performance. Winning two Grammy awards is awesome, but what singer has had the most Grammy nominations in one night? The answer to that question would be none other than Michael Jackson. In 1984, Michael Jackson would have one of the most commercially successful albums of all time when he released Thriller. Because of the success of the album, Jackson would be nominated for a total of 12 Grammys that night, winning 8 of them, including Grammys for “Album of the Year.” It would take 15 years before another musical artist would get even close to what Michael Jackson achieved that year. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 20, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
