Stuff You Need to Know
Good Friday morning. In many sports leagues, there is an award that is given to the best rookie player. The award is often called “Rookie of the Year”. But did you know that the very first player to win “Rookie of the Year” in Major League Baseball was a black man? His name was Jackie Robinson. He is credited as being the very first Black player to play for a Major League Baseball team in the modern era. Starring as a multi-sport athlete, Jackie Robinson was the very first athlete in UCLA history to letter in four sports: baseball, basketball, football, and track. In fact, baseball was Jackie Robinson’s worst sport, as he won NCAA championships in other events, including the long jump. After serving in the military and playing in the Negro Leagues, Jackie Robinson played first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1947 season. Because of the legacy of Jackie Robinson, his number, 42, is the only number that has been retired across the entire Major League. No player from any team is allowed to wear the number 42, except for one day a year, when every player from every team wears the number to commemorate the legacy of Jackie Robinson. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 21, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History!
