STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - FEBRUARY 26, 2025

Stuff You Need to Know

Good Wednesday morning. Continuing our journey to celebrate groundbreaking female Black History figures, did you know Bessie Coleman, born in 1892, was a pioneering aviator and the first African American and Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license? Born in Texas to a family of sharecroppers, she faced significant racial and gender barriers but was determined to pursue her dream of flying. Denied entry to aviation schools in the United States, she learned French and traveled to France, where she earned her pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in 1921. Upon returning to the U.S., she became a stunt pilot, dazzling audiences with daring aerial maneuvers and advocating for racial equality in aviation. Bessie Coleman’s legacy is how she inspired future Black aviators, including the Tuskegee Airmen, who were instrumental in World War II. In her honor, the Bessie Coleman Aviators Club was established in 1977 to support Black women in aviation. Additionally, in 1995, the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp in her honor, recognizing her contributions to both aviation and civil rights. Her determination and refusal to accept racial barriers continue to make her a symbol of resilience and progress in American history. This has been your Black History fact for Feb 26, 2025. Remember, Black History is American History.
