The winter sports season was a prosperous one for Oak Lawn Community High School this year as the boys bowling team won the Illinois High School Association Regional championship and another South Suburban Conference Red Title. The basketball teams kept rolling long as well with the girls winning their fifth-straight SSC Red title and the boys winning their fourth-straight SSC Red crown.
Here’s a breakdown of the winter sports awards at OLCHS.
In Boys Bowling, Justin Canvin was an IHSA State Qualifier and the team Most Valuable Player. All-regional selections included Gavin Rybicki (second place), Canvin (third place), and David Bush (fourth place). All-conference selections were Peter Garcia (first place), Canvin (second place), and Rybicki (third place). Rybicki was the Sportsmanship Award winner. Head coach Kevin Walery was named the SSC Coach of the Year.
In Boys Basketball, Donte Montgomery was named the SSC Red Player of the Year, and he was the team’s MVP. All-conference selections included Montgomery, Jack Dempsey, Marc Harvey, and Omar Saleh. Mustafa Abunajim won the Sportsmanship Award.
In Girls Basketball, team’s Co-MVPs were Danielle Dempsey and Lamia Quinones. The all-conference selections were Dempsey, Quinones, Teagan Krzystof, and Bianca Fleitas. Annie McGrath was picked as the Sportsmanship Award winner.
In Girls Bowling, the team’s MVP was Allison Lamberth. Allison Brown was the team’s Sportsmanship Award recipient, and she was an all-conference bowler, coming in 10th place at the SSC Red tournament.
In Competitive Cheerleading, Molly Cameron was an all-state selection by the Illinois High School Cheerleading Coaches Organization. She was also the team’s MVP. All-conference selections included Cameron and Julia Krok. The Sportsmanship Award went to Krok and Jocelyn DelValle.
In Competitive Dance, Kylie Garcia was the team’s MVP, and Ariana Baeza won the Sportsmanship Award. Marlanna Schillaci and Amelia Burrow were All-SSC Red selections.
In Boys Swimming and Diving, Cohen Laylo was an all-state diver, finishing in 11th place, and he was an all-conference diver, finishing in first place. Laylo and Vladimir Meza shared MVP honors. Colm Heneghan won the Sportsmanship Award.
In Boys Wrestling, Charlie Shane was an IHSA Sectional qualifier at 157-pounds, and he was the team’s MVP. Shane also earned all-conference honors, coming in second place in the 157-pound division. Ayman Shaikh won the Sportsmanship Award.
In Girls Wrestling, Charvelle McLain was an all-state wrestler, coming in fifth at 155 pounds. She was named the team’s MVP as well. IHSA Sectional qualifiers were McLain (155), Felix Alessi-Morales (100), and Journey Jackson (125). The Sportsmanship Award went to Alessi-Morales and Grace Anderson
